Mae Sot Short Projects
Safe Child Thailand (SCT)Mae Sot, Thailand ( July 2017 - February 2018)

MEP are delighted to be forging a new partnership with Safe Child Thailand this year. This is an exciting opportunity for MEP to work with an expanding and dynamic organisation whose roots are similar to those of MEP.

Safe Child Thailand (SCT) is a UK charity with more than 30 years’ experience working in Thailand, safeguarding children and empowering them to build a brighter future. Like MEP, one of SCT’s founding principles is that every child has the right to an education, and so this is a very natural partnership formed with mutual understanding and agreed objectives.

The current project will work with new teachers in Migrant Learning Centres across the region of Mae Sot and Phop Phra. Trainers will travel to schools in order to provide workshops and follow-up in-class support for new teachers. The workshops will be designed specifically to address the needs of the teachers and schools, requiring a clear understanding of the context in which the teachers are working.
Strong and trusting relationships with teachers is crucial to the success of such a project and MEP trainers are renowned for the time and care taken to build trust through sensitive and thoughtful approaches.

PLE Mae Sot, Thailand (October 2016 - July 2018)

MEP has been working alongside World Education in a project which supports 81 local teachers developing classroom teaching skills. MEP trainers provide weekly workshops for teachers from Migrant Learning Centres across Mae Sot and Phop Phra regions, with follow-up in-class support for the teachers, helping them to apply the skills learnt. The nature of the support given to these teachers is in line with the ethos of MEP, encouraging teachers to introduce an active approach, creating a positive environment and moving away from only using rote learning and repetition.

Sustainability is a key feature of MEP’s work and the PLE project has put a focus upon training Mentor Teachers in each of the schools. These more experienced teachers are provided with the skills necessary to support other teachers within their schools and so continue the work of MEP once the project is completed.
The impact of this training has seen 83% of teachers showing improvement with planning, 64% successfully introducing child-centred approaches and 79% assessing more effectively. All teachers who worked with MEP have shown significant progress as measured against the 12 Asean Teacher Competencies.

Help Without Frontiers (HWF) Mae Sot, Thailand (May 2017 - October 2018)
MEP have had a successful partnership with Help Without Frontiers (HWF) for a number of years, giving training and follow-up support to teachers from Migrant Learning Centres which come under the umbrella of HWF.

The current project has a dual focus: firstly, working with new teachers who are just starting out on their career. Many of these teachers have had minimal training and little classroom experience, so MEP is providing basic classroom skills training with follow-up in-class support to help the new teachers apply the skills learnt. Secondly, MEP are working with senior teachers to develop their skills as Mentors within their own schools.

This dual approach has the advantage of providing a sustainable model which in time will allow the Migrant Learning Centres to develop a self-sustaining teacher-mentoring system. This long-term strategy has significant benefits for teachers and school principals who are able to plan for a more stable and secure future.

BMTA Mae Sot, Thailand (July 2016 - March 2017)
